May 12, 2016“Old Cantankerous” Down for Repairs
May 12, 2016Gregg Hoel, a PMRR volunteer, has restored a 1934 Fairmount 2 cycle engine. This engine built by the Fairmount Railway Company was responsible for replacing the hand car that was used to bring personnel and equipment to a rail site to enact repairs. The two cycle engine is capable of running in either direction by turning the flywheel in either a clockwise or counter-clockwise direction to start it and adjusting the timing accordingly.
The following video shows Gregg starting this engine:
Gregg joined the Volunteers in 2008 and has been very active in restoring and repairing our railroad equipment. In addition he is a qualified fireman and engineer and can be seen running our 1907 Baldwin steam engine. Gregg is currently restoring an even older Fairmont 2 cycle engine. Besides his work on the Poway Midland railroad he is also a member of the Vista Gas and Steam Museum where he is restoring an old hand made Tractor.
